Trying your hand at art is one thing, but displaying your work, and competing for a spot in the national competition is another!

“Art provides patients with another voice, and helps them feel empowered,” said Shelley Knoodle, the Detroit VA Art Therapist. Knoodle is immensely proud of the program at the Detroit VA, a program that she has helped shape over the years.

Nearly 80 works were entered in the 2018 show on March 8th.

Veterans entered nearly 80 works in the 2018 show, held on March 8th at the Detroit VA.

On March 8, 2018, more than 70 works, created by 37 Veteran patients were on display at the medical center’s annual show. The show is a qualifier for the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, to be held this fall in Iowa.

“It’s a joy to see their work, to see how they can express themselves,” said Knoodle.

According to art therapist Shelley Knoodle, artistic ability is not a necessity when it comes to art therapy!

Many Veterans take part in the Detroit VA art therapy program, where according to therapist Shelley Knoodle, no prior experience is required!
