Hematology, Oncology and Chemotherapy

The mission of the hematology and medical oncology section here at the Detroit VA Medical Center, is to provide the most effective treatment, care and support for patients with a large number of blood disorders as well as patients with a diverse number of cancers. A large number of treatments including the use of oral chemotherapy drugs and chemotherapy drugs given by vein, are offered to our Veteran patients. In addition, drugs which have been designed to specifically attack tumor cells are utilized in certain cancer and blood disorders to treat patients.

The therapy offered to the Veteran patient depends on the cancer or blood disorder being treated. The chemotherapy drugs and oral agents utilized are the newest and most effective drugs for the treatment of the specific cancer. In addition, the hematology and medical oncology staff work in association with the radiation therapy, surgery, radiology and pathology sections of the hospital in providing comprehensive care and the most effective therapy for the specific cancer. The staff of the hematology and medical oncology section includes five hematologists/medical oncologists, all of whom are board certified in hematology and medical oncology. The personnel of the chemotherapy unit inclue three chemotherapy nurses also with significant experience in the delivery of chemotherapy drugs to patients with cancer and blood disorders. The hematology and medical oncology section is part of the cancer program at the John D.
